 FAQs

  • We are a preschool, specializing in setting a strong foundation for learning. Most of our classes are 2.5 hours in length. We do not provide childcare beyond our class times.

  • Preschool and Pre-K classes may go up to 16 in a class with 2 teachers.

  • Yes, we require children to be independent in the bathroom for all of our programs.  This requirement helps ensure that both teachers can be attentive to children in the classroom.

  • Our preschool programs utilize a teacher-created curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and based on monthly themes. This ensures that learning is meaningful and engaging for children. All curricular areas are integrated into these themes, which makes the learning process cohesive and relevant.

We adopt a play-based approach, meaning that all of our centers, art, literacy, and math-readiness activities offer rich learning opportunities through play. For example, in theHome Living Area we set up a “Post Office” with envelopes, stamps, and letter stickers. Children can "send" and "receive" letters, practicing writing and recognizing letters in a playful context.

Art experiences are offered daily and focus on the creative process rather than the end product. This allows your child to explore their creativity and make decisions independently, resulting in a unique masterpiece every time.

Our Pre-K program curriculum is designed to grow with your child, accommodating their developmental needs and abilities, whether they attend for one or two years. This flexibility ensures that each child can progress at their own pace.

Our curriculum is non-religious based, except for during Christmas and Easter. We believe in respecting the diversity of our students while still incorporating some traditional celebrations. Additionally, we do a short prayer before snack each day, which provides a moment of calm for the children.

  • We are a Christian organization, and our staff are Christians. While our curriculum isn't faith-based, we lovingly talk about Jesus during Christmas and Easter in a way that's suitable for young children. Each day, we pray before snack time in a simple and age-appropriate manner.

We warmly welcome families of all beliefs and backgrounds to be a part of our community.

  • Yes, children have recess each day while at school. They enjoy 20-30 minutes of playtime either on our outdoor playground or in our indoor multipurpose room/gym. This active break helps them use their large muscles and prepares them for better learning in the classroom.

  • Yes, we provide a simple snack along with water each school day.

  • We take food allergies very seriously, and our school is nut-free. Please make sure to list your child’s allergies on the registration form and inform your child’s teacher. During our “Meet the Teacher” night, parents will need to fill out a form detailing any allergies or food restrictions.

We provide nut-free snacks and occasionally offer special curriculum-related treats. Parents will be informed ahead of time if snacks differ from the usual, and you’ll have the opportunity to share any concerns. Our priority is to ensure every child is safe and happy!

  • Drop-off can begin 5 minutes before your child’s class starts. You are welcome to walk your child into the church foyer and to the Compass Kids entrance. Please hold up your child’s valet sign so we can direct them to the correct classroom. At the end of the session, you can walk in to pick up your child in person. Again, display your child’s valet sign, and your child will be dismissed to you. If you don’t have your valet sign, please talk with one of our staff and have your ID ready to confirm you’re authorized to pick up the child. Pro parent tip: take a photo of your child’s valet sign to keep on your phone in case you forget it.

We also offer complimentary valet service for drop-off and pick-up. Pull your car up in our valet lane at the front of the building, provide your child’s valet sign in a visible location and one of our friendly staff will get your child out of the car, walk them inside, and ensure they get to the correct classroom. It helps if your child is behind the front passenger seat for easy access. Valet service begins 5 minutes before class starts. For pick-up, simply pull up in the valet lane, display the valet sign, and we’ll bring your child to your car at the end of the session. Parents are responsible for buckling children into their car seats. Rain or shine, we offer valet!

You’ll receive a monthly newsletter from Compass Kids Preschool through the ChildPilot app. This newsletter will include updates on school-wide activities, curriculum highlights for each program, and other important information.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, our Directors are always available to help.

  • We believe in staying closely connected with our parents. We maintain ongoing communication through messaging in our ChildPilot app and regular newsletters. This way, you’ll always be in the loop about your child's activities and progress.

Twice a year, we distribute portfolios that include reflections on your child's observations and development. These portfolios provide a wonderful snapshot of their growth and experiences throughout the year.

  • We understand that everyone has tough days, especially at the beginning of the year when kids are adjusting to new routines and expectations. Our staff comes prepared with fun learning activities, plenty of energy, and the confidence that your little ones will learn the classroom rules, schedule, and how to get along with others. We believe that mistakes are learning opportunities.

We use the Nurtured Heart Approach pioneered by Howard Glasser. This approach is based on clear rules and lots of positive affirmation for good behaviors, which helps build inner wealth and confidence in children.

We also use the Social Thinking Curriculum (The Incredible Flexible You) to support social and emotional growth. This curriculum helps teach children how to be part of a group, manage their bodies, and keep reactions appropriate to the size of the problem.

Problems do happen during the day, and we work through them together. That's what preschool is all about. If there is a safety issue or we need to partner with parents to help a child, we will let you know. Otherwise, rest assured that we've got it covered and your child's well-being is our top priority.

Thanks for trusting us with your little ones. We can't wait to see them grow and thrive!

  • Please keep your child home until they are symptom-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Notify your child's teacher in advance of any absences using email or the parent portal. For extended absences, please inform both the teacher and the school office of your plans. Note that tuition is not discounted for absences due to illness or travel.

  • Come visit us for an in-person tour by signing up on our homepage! We’d love for you to bring your child along so we can meet them and make them feel at home. Please take a look at our FAQs before your visit. We’re excited to welcome you to our preschool family!

  • Registration for the upcoming school year opens in February for our current and alumni families, followed by the public. Be sure to check the campus page on our website for specific dates and times. All registration is done online and continues on an ongoing basis.

We look forward to welcoming new and returning families!

  • If you're unable to register for a class, it’s likely full. Having a second or third choice in mind when registering can help you secure a spot in a class that works for you. You are welcome to add your child to the wait list(s) without any extra charges. We often see changes between registration opening and the start of school, so spots can become available. If a spot opens up, we’ll contact the next person on the wait list via call or email, please make sure your contact information is correct in the Parent Portal. While we can't guarantee a spot will open up, we diligently manage the wait lists.

If you don’t have a second or third choice for a program/time, you can still add your child to a wait list at no charge. When a spot becomes available, we will contact you and offer the spot. Though you will enter a credit card in the Parent Portal for registration, you won’t be charged a registration fee until you secure a spot in a class.

  • We provide each student with their very own school bag to bring home their special items and important communications.

  • To ensure your child has a great day, please send them with a full tummy, a good night's rest, comfortable running shoes, a small reusable water bottle, and a jacket with their name on it (if it’s cool). And, of course, a kiss and a hug from you! Preschool families can also pack a change of clothes in a labeled Ziploc bag for any unexpected accidents during the year. We'll provide a school bag within the first week or two, and we'll handle all the snacks.

  • We understand children may feel anxious about separating from their parents at the beginning of the school year. This is a typical behavior, and we're well-prepared to help with the transition. We provide extra staff at the beginning of the year to offer additional support and schedule a "Meet the Teacher" session the day before school starts, so families can visit the classroom, meet the teacher, and become familiar with the environment.

Parents can help by showing confidence in their children's ability to manage themselves and by keeping "goodbyes" brief. If a child cries, they usually settle within a few minutes. Consistency and positive attitudes are key, and most children adjust within a week or two.
